The museum has received a very acceptable number of visitors since it opened. The theatrical performances have been especially popular with both Icelandic tourists and foreign groups conducted by travel agencies.

The number of guests visiting the museum every year is around 8500. Foreign visitors are usually around one-third of our guests.

The Herring Era Museum has won several awards. In 2004 The Herring Era Museum was the winner of the European Museum Award (The Micheletti Award) as the best new industrial museum. Our Museum was also the first winner of the Icelandic Museum Award in 2000.
