The Herring Era Museum was the first winner of the Icelandic Museum Award 2000 and won the European Museum Award 2004, the Micheletti award.
The museum has received a very acceptable number of visitors since it opened. The theatrical performances have been especially popular with both Icelandic tourists and foreign groups conducted by travel agencies.
The number of guests exceeded 4000 in 1994 - ever since the number has grown and in 2011 the number of guests nearly reached 20.000!
Foreign visitors are usually about one-third of our guests.
