The The museum is located in Róaldsbrakki, an old Norwegian herring station built in 1907. The 'brakki' is in itself a grand monument to the Norwegian influence in the Icelandic herring industry.
On the ground floor, there is an exhibition focused on the fishing and salting process, by means of authentic objects, old photographs, and written text. The exhibition continues on the first floor where more attention is given to the export of herring products and administration of the processing.
On the first floor there are also two smaller exhibitions, one about the history of herring fisheries elsewhere in The old "brakki" has largely been left as it was when inhibited by dozens of girls working in the herring in the summer. When walking through their former lodgings on the third floor, one can easily sense the atmosphere of the old times. The same applies for "the office of the herring speculator" from which the salting station was run, and where the employees got paid.
In front of Róaldsbrakki there is an old-fashioned quay with everything set up for the salting process. There guests can enjoy the atmosphere of the realistic performances of the local theatrical group. These performances show the working methods and allow guests to experience the action in the salting stations, which often ended in everyone dancing to music played on the accordion.
